Gynecomastia

Overdeveloped breasts in men is more common than you might think. At our Tallahassee, Florida, plastic surgery practice, our surgeons perform male breast reduction surgery on men of all ages. The condition, known as gynecomastia, most often presents in adolescent men and is often outgrown. Gynecomastia is a fairly common condition that affects an estimated 40-60% of men and causes enlarged breasts glands. While there are no health risks associated with the condition, gynecomastia often makes men from Destin, FL; Dothan, AL; Valdosta and Thomasville, GA; and surrounding areas feel self-conscious and reduces their self-esteem.  The condition can be permanent for many men unless they opt for a male breast reduction procedure.

Who Is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

For men with gynecomastia, the breast glands can grow to an unusually large size, resulting in embarrassingly large breasts. Gynecomastia can occur in one or both breasts. A large number of gynecomastia cases emerge in boys going through puberty; a significant percentage will eventually outgrow it. Some, however, will not be able to get rid of their enlarged breasts, no matter how physically active they are.

What Is Male Breast Reduction Like?

Male breast reduction involves the surgical removal of excess fat, glandular tissue and occasionally skin. For men with unusually large areolas (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) or a significant excess of skin, these problems are also corrected during surgery.
