Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation, or augmentation mammoplasty, increases breast volume and creates shapelier, more feminine contours for women who are unsatisfied with their current breast size or shape. At Southeastern Plastic Surgery, P.A., in Tallahassee, breast augmentation patients come from Destin and Lake City, FL; Dothan, AL; Valdosta, GA; and many smaller communities in between.

When you meet with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, he’ll consult closely with you to determine the most effective treatment plan and make sure you achieve your best possible results.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a highly customizable cosmetic plastic surgery procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts through the use of silicone or saline implants. The procedure can:

  • Compensate for a lack of natural breast tissue
  • Enlarge breasts that are not in proportion with the body
  • Correct lost volume after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Balance breast asymmetry

Breast Augmentation vs. Breast Lift

While both are breast enhancement procedures, breast augmentation and breast lift provide different benefits. Breast augmentation adds fullness but does not correct sagging breasts. Breast lift surgery restores a youthful shape and a higher position on the chest.

Which Types of Breast Implants Are Available?

We are proud to offer silicone and saline Mentor® implants, which are manufactured here in the United States.

Breast Implant Material Options

The choice between saline and silicone is a personal one. Each option offers unique benefits.

  • Saline: These are comprised of a silicone shell filled with sterile saltwater. While they tend to be a cost-effective option, they’re more likely to show rippling and may have a less natural feel. They’re FDA-approved for women 18 years or older.
  • Silicone: These consist of a silicone shell filled with cohesive silicone gel. While these typically come at a higher price point, most women say they look and feel more like natural breast tissue. They’re FDA-approved for women 22 years or older.

For more information about choosing breast implants, review this blog post.

Implant Placement Options

The implant may be placed directly behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the chest wall muscle (submuscular).

Implant Profiles

An implant’s profile refers to how far it projects from the body when viewed from the side. Low-profile implants have a wide base and a slight projection. At the other end of the spectrum, extra high-profile implants have a very narrow base and offer more obvious projection. Most people choose an implant profile that falls between those two options; moderate or moderate plus-profile implants offer natural-looking projection and a base width that suits most body types.

Incision Placement Options

Breast implants can be placed using a variety of incisions, each designed to disguise scars in discreet locations. Your implant material, anatomy, and other factors will affect your surgeon’s selection.

  • Inframammary: Along the crease under the breast
  • Periareolar: Semicircle around the bottom of the areola
  • Transaxillary: Hidden inside the armpit

Do Breast Implants Ever Need To Be Replaced?

Although breast implants are very durable, they are not designed to last a lifetime. Most patients find that they will need to have their implants removed or replaced with breast revision surgery at some point. Should your implant desires change for any reason, even if your breast implants are still healthy, breast revision surgery is an option.

How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?

Breast augmentation surgery typically lasts 1 to 1.5 hours and is performed on an outpatient basis at our licensed onsite surgery center. You’ll be placed under general anesthesia during the surgery. After making an incision, your surgeon will place the implant into a pocket created within the breast and close the area using absorbable sutures. You’ll wake up in our comfortable recovery room and will be sent home after a few hours with detailed instructions for at-home care.

Which Procedures Can Be Performed Along With a Breast Augmentation?

Many patients who chose breast augmentation also want to reshape their bodies in other ways. Often, they combine breast augmentation with liposuction to reduce pockets of fat around their midsection or bra line and a tummy tuck to trim and tighten loose skin on the abdomen. This is a popular body contouring combination, often called a mommy makeover, for women after pregnancy and breastfeeding or losing a significant amount of weight. You can read more about this in our blog post.

Is Breast Augmentation Painful?

We always strive to improve patient comfort. We perform ultrasound-guided anesthesia blocks to reduce pain after surgery. The nerves responsible for pain after surgery can be temporarily anesthetized, giving long-lasting post-surgical pain relief.

How Long Is Breast Augmentation Recovery?

Your incisions will be covered with tape for 1 to 2 weeks as your sutures are naturally absorbed. Most patients return to daily activities within the first week and resume strenuous upper body activity after 3 to 4 weeks.

Planning for your recovery often makes the process easier.

  • Prepare your recovery space with everything you’ll need within easy reach, such as medication, TV remotes, electronic devices, tissues, hand lotion, your surgeon’s post-op instructions, and a small pillow.
  • Fill prescriptions before your surgery.
  • Enlist the support of friends or family who can help with household chores, child care, and transportation while you are recovering.
  • Get used to sleeping on your back if you usually sleep on your stomach. Some people find that propping pillows under each arm helps train their bodies for back-sleeping.

After surgery, follow your surgeon’s instructions closely. You should plan to:

  • Keep your incisions dry. Once you’ve been cleared to shower, gently pat your incisions dry. Do not go swimming or soak in a bathtub or hot tub.
  • Sleep in a slightly elevated position to reduce swelling.
  • Refrain from vigorous activity such as running or weight lifting.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

What’s the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure using breast implants to make the breasts larger.

What do breast augmentation scars look like?

Scars are initially red or pink and slightly raised, but they will flatten and fade to a white or faint pink color over time. Breast augmentation incisions are well concealed, so once scars have fully healed, they usually aren’t very visible.

Are breast implants safe?

Saline and silicone breast implants are approved by the FDA for breast augmentation and have been studied thoroughly. As with any surgery and medical device, though, there are some risks. Be sure to talk with your surgeon about your risk factors and follow their instructions to keep your implants safe.

Which implant type creates the most cleavage?

Cleavage is created by breasts that have upper pole fullness and are relatively close together. The implant that will create the best cleavage for you depends on your chest dimensions, implant size and profile, and where your surgeon puts your breast implant pocket.

What’s the best age for breast implants?

There is no best age for getting breast implants. It’s more a matter of when you feel ready to get the breasts you’ve always wanted. Because of FDA requirements, however, you must be at least 18 years old to get saline implants and at least 22 years old to have silicone implants.

Will I need to wear a bra after surgery?

Wearing a bra will help you maintain your firm, youthful breast shape because gravity and the natural aging process will eventually create some degree of sagging. Read this blog post for details about bra shopping after breast augmentation.

Can I still breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery?

A woman’s ability to breastfeed should not be affected by breast augmentation. If nursing future children is important to you, be sure to discuss your needs with your surgeon.

Will I eventually have to replace my implants?

Breast implants are not lifetime devices, so most patients need to replace them at some point. However, if you are happy with your current implants and are not experiencing any concerns, it is safe to leave them in place.

What if I want to remove my implants later?

Our surgeons perform explant surgery, often called breast implant removal, for women who want to remove their implants altogether.
